Introduction to Statistics with SPSS face to face (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences)
Duration 2 days
Team Researcher Academy

This face to face course is run by the Researcher Academy

The Researcher Academy courses are very popular and the majority are run in both semesters to give you the opportunity to attend at a time of the year that suits you.

Target Audience: This course is part of the M&HS Faculty Training Programme convened by Researcher Academy. This course is for Postgraduate Research Students and Research Staff in the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences only.

Process:

This course is two half day sessions in a seminar room. This course comprises two sessions on consecutive weeks. The second session in the course builds upon the previous weeks’ session and therefore attendance at both sessions is mandatory if you wish to register for this course.
The content of this course and that of ‘Introduction to SPSS for researchers’ is similar and students are unlikely to find it useful to attend both courses.

Description:

This course is two half-days, and assumes a minimum of familiarity with statistics. In the time available a comprehensive coverage of the subject is impossible, and this should be regarded as an introduction to statistical principles and SPSS statistical software. This course is a combination of theory-based lecture and a computer-based practical.

Aims:

To help you to understand the use of statistics in reviewing scientific literature, planning research, and reporting and analysing research
data. Provide an introduction to SPSS statistical software.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course you will be able to:
•   describe and classify data using statistical terminology
•   use SPSS to conduct basic descriptive analyses and graphical presentations
•   define the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis
•   interpret P values and confidence intervals
•   understand different measures of effect (e.g. mean difference, odds ratio)
•   know when to use basic statistical hypothesis tests(t-tests, chi-squared tests, correlation) and how to carry out these hypothesis tests using SPSS
•   appreciate how to present and interpret these results in scientific reports
•   recognise some of the pitfalls associated with statistical analysis
•   know when you need to seek expert statistical advice

Booking Conditions

Latecomer policy

Researchers should plan to arrive prior to the advertised course start time. Except for exceptional reasons, there will be no admittance to a Researcher Academy or Faculty Training Programme (FTP) course 15 minutes after the advertised course start time.

Importance of booking commitment

When booking on to a Researcher Academy short course you are entering into a commitment to attend. If you find that you are no longer available to attend you MUST cancel your place (on the system if more than three days before the course) or if at short notice by emailing bb-ra-training@nottingham.ac.uk. This will ensure that your place can be offered to another researcher on the waiting list. Failure to cancel a with at least 24 hours notice results in other researchers missing out on places through the waiting list process.

It is unacceptable for researchers to just not attend when booked onto a course. The Researcher Academy maintains records of those who repeatedly do not attend courses they have booked. This may affect future eligibility to book onto further Researcher Academy courses and will affect considerations for Researcher Academy funded opportunities.
