Title

Research Supervisor Seminar Series :

Thesis by Published work. A conversation to understand the fundamentals

Target Audience

University staff involved in research supervision (either formally or informally)

Process

Seminar session

Course Description

Quality Manual guidance does cover Thesis by Publication, however, important judgements for supervisors still remain. In this session, three colleagues who have wrestled with these judgments share their thinking in discussion with one another before widening the discussion to the audience. Whilst answers may not be definitive, you can expect to have a better understanding of the considerations a supervisor may be involved in when supervising a Thesis by Published Work.

Questions considered will include:

  • How clear is it to those planning the thesis that the publications need to be a progressive set, focussed on a particular contribution to knowledge?
  • What happens if, to get published, the articles require very substantial changes (often happens in social science) and so a direct line of argument is lost?
  • How can students avoid repeating content across publications?
  • What is the role of the supervisor in terms of authorship of those publications?
  • Should the supervisor’s name be on the publications- it normally would be if the second person has put so much into the ideas and drafts, even if they had not collected the data?
  • How far do the publications have to go in making the “original contribution?”
  • What happens if the publications do not get accepted in the period of study and are, therefore, not publications?
